Brooklyn’s Red Hook: Lobster rolls, beautiful aging industrial architecture, history-rich nautical dutch neighborhood and also home to the well-known Nike Red Hook Crit; Rich ingredients for a creative solution
We were approached by Nike to design a fully immersive art installation for the 10th edition of the iconic race. The installation had to act as a "tunnel" for runners to pass through for a dramatic finish to the race.

David August Trimble first held the Red Hook Criterium in March 2008 on the sleepy streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn, with about 15 cyclists on bikes intended for a velodrome. It was informal and unsanctioned, with little vision for the future. Over the years, it gained so much popularity that it has inspired similar fixed-gear criteriums around the world.
Getting all sorts of inspiration from Red Hook’s street textures and people, we went on to design an immersive space / shelter for audiences to cheer on their favourite runners.

INSTALLATION VIEWS
The installation consisted of two 40ft containers that were fully painted on the inside and outside. The exteriors were cladded with materials that could be found from the neighborhood such as gates, doors, wood, corrugated metal, tin sheets, industrial lights, chain link fences and shoes strewn over iconic brooklyn power cables, and even a red seafaring hook we found.
No longer a chaotic street race, the event is contested on a winding, closed-circuit course just over a kilometer long, featuring tight chicanes, sweeping turns and high-speed straightaways. The 40ft containers served as a dramatic finish line for the runners.

The interiors fully painted from floor to ceiling in our signature colors of black, white and red. Red neon LEDs illuminate the installation towards the night and changes the vibe.

One of the many designs were also translated into a capsule collection at the Nike Soho Flagship store. Customers could pick and choose graphics to make up their own T-shirts, totebags and sweatshirts.
